
The difference in priorities depend on the business model
It has been clear for many years now, based on clinical research, that a plant-based diet is instrumental in not only treating, but in many cases REVERSING chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and general obesity, as well as significantly impacting the incidence of cancer. Interestingly, Kaiser Permanente, which is a health maintenance organization, actually took the plunge and put it on paper and into policy – see the attached booklet for the important findings and recommendations.
So why don’t traditional insurers push a plant based diet? If there was a drug that would do what a plant-based diet does, there is no question it would be a standard prescription. So what gives?
The answer lies in how they make their money. The health insurance industry gets a percentage of the health care expenditure pie. The larger the expenditure, the larger their piece. By comparison, Kaiser gets paid per member, and profits when patients remain healthy and disease free.
